I hear lots of discussion about wound channels.

So what is the best type of wound channel? Is it a huge blown up chunk of tissue? is it a hole punched all the way through? I have always though that I should shoot a hole all the way through the animal break both shoulders if it running is a bad thing, and always get at least one lung with the heart. Is there some new science of killing animals out there? Does any one have any input? I am just a little lost in all the commotion.
